Best Eggnog Recipe

Classic homemade egg nog made with eggs, milk, cream, and nutmeg.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 large egg yolks
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg plus more for garnish
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional Alcohol (to taste):
  • ½ –1 cup bourbon rum, or brandy
  • Optional Topping:
  • Whipped cream
  • Freshly grated nutmeg

Instructions
 

  • Whisk egg yolks and sugar until pale.
  • Heat milk and cream with nutmeg.
  • Temper eggs, then cook until slightly thickened.
  • Add vanilla and alcohol.
  • Chill and serve.

Notes

  • Temper slowly to avoid curdling
  • Chill overnight for the best flavor
  • Fresh nutmeg makes a difference
  • Alcohol optional
